Methodology

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Using GeneXpert® (Cepheid)
 

Specimen Requirements

Vaginal/rectal double swabs (Copan Transport Swab).  The first swab will be used for PCR testing and the second swab will be used for subsequent testing.

Specimens may be stored at 2-8  C for up to six days.

Reference Values

Negative

If PCR testing is indeterminate, routine Strep B culture will be refelxively ordered.

If PCR testing is positive, antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be performed if requested.
