Specimen Requirements

Specimen with moderate visible blood contamination is not acceptable.

 

Specimen must arrive as soon as possible after collection.

 

Send 0.5 mL of amniotic fluid in a sterile vial, refrigerated.  Do not centrifuge the specimen.

 

Additional Information: If ordering provider wants an amniotic fluid for lung maturity and does not specify test, order  Fetal Lung Maturity (FLM), Amniotic Fluid and Phosphatidyl Glycerol (PG), Amniotic Fluid. Send a separate specimen for each test requested.

Reference Range

Negative:  PTG is absent at concentrations associated with a significant of R.D.S.

 

Low positive:  Correlates well with lung maturity. (However, there is a low incidence of R.D.S., especially in cases involoving Diabetes Mellitus.

 

High positive:  Predictive of lung maturity.
