Testing Algorithm:
If the triglycerides are >400 mg/dL, then LDL cholesterol, direct will be performed at an additional charge.
Specimen Requirements
Specimens are stable for 3 days at 2-8C
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
PlasmaDraw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) plasma
gel tube(s) from a fasting (12 hour) patient. Spin down and send 1
mL of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s) from a fasting (12 hour) patient.
Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Unspun specimens must be transported at abmient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.

LDL CHOLESTEROL, CALCULATED
The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines (reference values) for LDL cholesterol, calculated:
Desirable: ≤100 mg/dL
Borderline: 130-159 mg/dL
Undesirable: 160-189 mg/dL
