Specimen Requirements

Separated specimens may be stored for up to 24 hours at room temperature or for up to 7 days at 4°C.

 

Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s), EDTA or sodium heparin tube,  6 to 8 hours after last dose. Trough level should be drawn 30 minutes before next dose. Spin down and send 1 mL of serum/plasma refrigerated.

 

Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.

Reference Values

Therapeutic concentration:  0.6-1.2 mEq/L

Critical value (automatic call-back):  >2.0 mEq/L
