Methodology
Chemiluminescence
If results are 1.0 or greater, then confirmation by PCR will be performed at Mayo Medical Laboratories.
Specimen Requirements
Serum from gel tube is preferred, plasma from lithium heparin tube is acceptable.
Spin down within 2 hours of draw, and send 3 mL of serum (or plasma). If there is a delay in transport of >7 days, freeze specimen in plastic vial.
Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.

In order to reduce the incidence of false-positive results, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all s/co ratios between 1.0 and 10.9 be confirmed with additional testing. Specimens will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for PCR confirmation.
