Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s) preferred. Plasma from lithium heparin tube is acceptable.
Spin down within 2 hours of draw, and send 2 mL of serum (or plasma). Avoid hemolysis. If there is a delay in transport of >3 days, freeze specimen in plastic vial.
Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.
Reference Values
Index Value <0.50: Non-reactive for total antibodies to hepatits B core antigen
Index Value >0.50 and <0.99: Retest
Index Value >1.00: Reactive for total antibodes to Hepatitis B core antigen. Results >1.00 will reflex to Hepatitis B core IgM antibody test at an additional charge.
The Index value is the cutoff of the assay and is not indicative of the antibody level present in the sample.
