Reference Values

Patients with urinary, menstrual, constipation, or hemorrhoid bleeding should not be considered for this test. These patients may be considered once such bleeding ceases.

Urine and excessive dilution of specimens with water from the toilet bowl may cause erroneous test results.

Alcohol and certain medications, such as aspirin, indomethacin, reserpine, phenlbutazone, corticosteroids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may cause gastrointestinal irritaion and subsequent bleeding in some patients. Such substances should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior to testing.

False-negative results may occur even when gastrointestinal disorder is present and may result from intermittent bleeding or lack of uniform distribution of occult blood throughout the bowel movement. Repeat testing is recommended when a pathological condition is suspected.
