Specimen Requirements

Serum, EDTA plasma and heparinized plasma are acceptable sample type.

Spin down and send 3 mL of serum/plasma refrigerated. If there is a delay in transport of >2 days, freeze specimen in plastic vial.

Do not use samples that have been stored at room temperature for longer than 20 hours.

Tightly cap and refrigerate specimens at 2–8°up to 48 hours.

Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.

Reference Values

Reference ranges were generated using data from serum specimens from 456 apparently healthy individuals based on the inner 95% interval, the following ranges were established.

The ranges were verified at St. Luke’s Hospital Laboratory and reported in pg/mL.

 

Males:  not detectable-39.8 pg/mL

Females

Menstruating by day in cycle relative to the LH peak:

Follicular phase -12 to -4 days:  19.5-144.2 pg/mL

Midcycle -3 to +2 days:  63.9-356.7pg/mL

Luteal phase +4 to +12 days:  55.8-214.2 pg/mL

Postmenopausal (untreated):  not detected-32.2 pg/mL

Specimen Stability
