Specimen Requirements

Procedure:

1. Call St. Luke’s Hospital Infusion Therapy at 218-249-6001 to schedule test.

2. Draw a baseline specimen no more that 30 minutes prior to administration of cosyntropin.

3. Administer 0.25 mg or 0.001 g of cosyntropin by intravenous infusion or intramuscular injection.

4. Draw specimen at  60-minutes post cosyntropin administration.

5.  If the physician has requested a 30 minute cortisol, order a cortisol for the 30 minute draw. 

 

Specimen Collection:

Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated. If there is a delay in transport of >7 days, freeze specimen in plastic vial.

Note:  1. Specimen can only be thawed once.

2. Indicate time of draw on request form.

3. Label specimen appropriately (time of draw).

 

Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.
