- Medinet Ref Code: CORTR
- OV Code: CHEM*CORTR
Performing Laboratory
St. Lukes Hospital Laboratory
Methodology
Competitive Chemiluminescent Immunoassay
Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s) preferred. Plasma from a lithium heparin tube is acceptable.
Spin down and send 1 mL of serum (or plasma) refrigerated. If there is a delay in transport of 48 hours, freeze specimen in plastic vial.
Note: Specimen can only be thawed once.
Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.
Reference Values
Reference ranges vary according to the time of day the specimen is drawn.
0800: 5-25 mcg/dL
1600: approximately half of the morning result
Interfering Substances:
Circulating cortisol results may be falsely elevated in specimens drawn from patients being treated with prednisolone or prednisone (converted to prednisolone in vivo). Caution must therefore be exercised with cortisol determinations for patients undergoing therapy with these and structurally-related synthetic corticosteroids.
