Important Note

This test is intended as an aid in the diagnosis of congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in patients younger than 35 days old through the recovery of HSV using viral culture (shell-vial)

 

HSV PCR is the preferred test for vaginal sources and adult patients.

Methodology

Enzyme linked virus inducible system.  In this cell line, HSV infection causes the expression of a beta galactosidase "reporter gene", and it is the expression of this gene that can be used to monitor infection by HSV.

Specimen Requirements

Specimens are best collected within the first three days following the appearance of a lesion but no more than seven days.

 

Submit one of the following specimens:

 

Fluid:

Submit 1 mL of vesicular fluid, urine, or CSF in viral transport media or a steril leakproof container.

Swabs:

Swabs from lesions, nasopharyngeal, throat, eye, sources submitted in viral transport media.

Tissue:

 0.5 grams of tissue from biopsy and autopsy sources submitted in viral transport media.

 

All specimens must be stored and transported at 4° C.
