Test Code CFV Fungal Culture, Vaginal

Important Note

Use for genital vaginal specimens.

 

Specimens will be directly inoculated to media and maintained in the appropriate environment for the full incubation period. Cultures exhibiting growth of yeast will be given an identification of Candida albicans, or a presumptive identification of C. tropicalis, C. krusei, or C. glabrata. Non-Candida yeast and all other fungal isolates will be sent to a reference laboratory for further identification.

Methodology

Conventional Culture

KOH prep is included. Identification is performed on all positive cultures as an additional charge. Susceptibilities performed by request at an additional charge.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Genital specimens: male and female

 

Acceptable specimens

All non-swab specimens should be submitted unpreserved, in a sterile container unless otherwise specified. Although fluids, aspirates, and tissues are the preferred specimen type, swab specimens will be accepted when submitted in transport media (Amie’s, Stuart, or Gel). 

 

Specimens should remain at room temperature during transport to the laboratory.
