Test Code CFRT Fungal Culture, Routine

Important Note

Specimens will be directly inoculated to media and maintained in the appropriate environment for the full incubation period. Cultures exhibiting growth of yeast will be given an identification of Candida albicans, or a presumptive identification of C. tropicalis, C. krusei, or C. glabrata. Non-Candida yeast and all other fungal isolates will be sent to a reference laboratory for further identification.

Methodology

Conventional Culture

Includes a KOH prep. Identification is performed on all positive cultures as an additional charge. Susceptibilities are performed by request at an additional charge.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Acceptable specimens

* All non-swab specimens should be submitted unpreserved, in a sterile container unless otherwise specified. Although fluids, aspirates, and tissues are the preferred specimen type, swab specimens will be accepted when submitted in transport media (Amie’s, Stuart, or Gel). 

* All tissues should be submitted in small amounts of sterile saline to maintain moisture.

*Specimens should remain at room temperature during transport to the laboratory, except for bone marrow, which should always be refrigerated.

 

Acceptable specimens

 

  • Bone marrow collected in sterile container or heparin vacutainer; refrigerated. Minimum of 0.5mL.
  • Sinus aspirates or Sinus tissue
  • Nasal lesion or ulcer biopsy tissue
  • Oral lesion biopsy tissue
  • Oral swab or expectorated saline rinse
  • Bronch wash
  • Bronch brush submitted in 1ml sterile saline
  • BAL fluid (5-10ml)
  • Lung biopsy tissue submitted in 1ml sterile saline
  • Sputum: expectorated or Induced: early morning specimen is ideal.
  • Abdominal fluid (5-10ml)
  • CSF (3-5ml) in sterile container
  • Pleural fluid
  • Synovial fluid
  • Thoracentesis fluid
  • Urine; unpreserved in sterile container
  • Eye specimens: drainage, vitreous fluid, corneal scrapings, etc.
  • External Ear swabs
  • Medical/prosthetic devices: submitted in sterile container with sterile saline
  • Abscess: aspirate in sterile container
  • Wound specimens: aspirate preferred, but swabs are acceptable
  • Esophageal brush submitted in sterile saline
