Specimen Requirements

Procedure:

1. Call St. Luke’s Hospital Infusion Therapy at 218-249-6001 to schedule test.

2. Draw a baseline specimen no more that 30 minutes prior to administration of elemental calcium.

3. Administer 165 mg of elemental calcium per physicians order.

4. Draw additional specimens at 5- and 10-minutes post elemental calcium administration.

Specimen Collection:

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum frozen in plastic vial.

Note:  1. Indicate time of draw on request form.

2. Label specimen appropriately (time of draw).

Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.
