Methodology

Microscopic identification of external parasite including flea, mite, scabies, and ticks (identification of Ixodes species).

Specimen Requirements

Flea, Mite, or Tick

1. Place parasite in a screw-capped container.

2. Add a small piece of wet gauze or cotton, wedge at top of container. (Specimen must not dry out.)

3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

 

Scabies

1. Submit skin scrapings on glass microscope slide.

2. Cover with a clean slide and fasten down to transport. (Rubber bands work well.)

3. Place slide in plastic slide holder.
4. Label holder with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
