Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) plasma gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated, stable up to 3 days at 2 - 8°C.
Freeze samples for up to 60 days at -20°C
Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum
refrigerated, stable up to 3 days at 2 - 8°C.
Freeze samples for up to 60 days at -20°C
Note: 1. Indicate serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Unspun specimens must be transported at ambient temperature and arrive to the laboratory within one hour of draw.
Reference Values
0-14 years: 3.8-5.4 g/dL
15-18 years: 3.2-4.5 g/dL
>18 years: 3.5-5.0 g/dL
Interfering Substances:
CMPF (3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-porpyl-2-furanpropanoic acid) present in sera of patients with renal failure has been reported to give falsely low albumin values.
