Methodology
Smears may be utilized when examining a variety of body sites to include oral mucosa, ulcerated skin lesions, etc. Smears are not often used in herpes detection.

Cytologic evaluation of smears is a diagnostic aid for detection of cancer, its precursors, and inclusion bodies. It is useful for detection in asymptomatic patients, in high-risk groups, and in patients with clinically suspected carcinomas. It is also an aid in detection of benign processes such as opportunistic infections.
Specimen Requirements
Call St. Luke’s Hospital Cytology Laboratory at 218-249-5315 to obtain supplies.
1. Using a lead pencil, write patient’s name and date of birth on frosted/coated end of slide(s).
2. Obtain material with spatula or scalpel blade from inner margins of lesion.
3. Spread material thinly on labeled glass slide(s).
4. Immediately fix slide(s) with cytology fixative spray.
5. Place slide(s) in plastic slide holder.
6. Label holder with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
7. Forward promptly at ambient temperature.
Note: Complete a “Request for Specimen Analysis” in “Request Forms” in “Special Instructions” including patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, source of specimen, pertinent clinical history, and billing information. Forward it with the specimen.
Reference Values
Diagnostic interpretation is based on morphologic cellular changes and is reported to the clinician using descriptions, comments, and recommendations when appropriate.
