Specimen Requirements

1. Using a lead pencil, write patient’s name and date of birth on frosted/coated end of slide(s).

2. Support areola and nipple with 1 hand. Gently strip sub-areolar area going towards nipple.

3. Wipe areolar area with alcohol soaked gauze.

4. Squeeze nipple to produce a drop of secretion.

5. Wipe away first drop of secretion.

6. Touch labeled glass slide to second drop, draw slide across nipple to spread drop, take care not to collect cellular material from nipple epithelium.

7. Immediately fix slide(s) with cytology fixative spray or immerse in jar with 95% alcohol.

8. Place slide(s) in plastic slide holder.

9. Label holder/jar with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

10. Forward promptly at ambient temperature.

Note:  1. Indicate source and “right” or “left” breast on specimen container and request form.

2. Complete a “Request for Specimen Analysis” in “Request Forms” in “Special Instructions” including patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, type of specimen, pertinent clinical history, previous history of malignancy, masses etc., and billing information. Forward it with the specimen.

Reference Values

Diagnostic interpretation is based on morphologic cellular changes and is reported to the clinician using descriptions, comments, and recommendations when appropriate.
