Methodology
Preservation of specimens in formalin for gross and microscopic examination
Specimen Requirements
1. After collecting the tissue sample, place the specimen in a container of 10% neutral buffered formalin (available from St. Luke’s Laboratory). Each specimen must be submitted in a separate container with a formalin tissue ratio of 10:1.
2. Label specimen container with a minimum of the patient’s full name, date of birth, type of specimen/anatomic location.
3. Complete a Request for Specimen Analysis form in its entirety along with patient billing information. Multiple specimens can be listed on a request form but must be detailed separately ( ie, bilateral vasectomy specimen should be listed as “right vas” and “left vas” on both the containers and paperwork).
4. Place tightly sealed specimen contatiner(s) in a biohazard bag and forward with completed paperwork to St. Luke’s Laboratory.
Reference Values
Diagnostic interpretation is based on morphologic cellular changes and is reported to the clinician using descriptions, comments, and recommendations when appropriate.
